Two Years of Progress:
Constructing a Diversion Structure and Junction Box with Anchor-Lok HDPE Natural Lining
A major wastewater infrastructure project in a large southeastern metro area has been underway for more than two years. Atlas has supported the effort from the beginning, helping protect both the Diversion Structure and the Junction Box. Together, these structures cover nearly 12,000 square feet and will serve a new wastewater station designed to support nearly 200,000 residents across the metro area.
The construction of the Diversion Structure and Junction Box has been a significant undertaking, requiring extensive planning, coordination, and execution.
From the outset, the project demanded close collaboration among design engineers, field engineers, contractors, utility owners, and operations personnel. The structures were designed to manage and redirect wastewater flows while providing reliable access for future maintenance and system modifications.
The installation of Anchor-Lok required careful planning and precise execution. Early in the project, measures were taken to have on-site supervision in coordination with the general contractor to streamline the installation process. Construction activities began earlier this year, with the majority of liner installation and welding completed during the summer months.
Several factors contributed to the project's extended timeline, including material procurement, coordination with ongoing utility operations, site access limitations, weather conditions, and the complexities associated with constructing below-grade structures. Despite these challenges, the city remains on track to achieve its target completion date several months ahead of the original deadline.
The extended construction period also provided the project team with opportunities to emphasize quality workmanship and thorough quality assurance. Comprehensive inspections were conducted throughout the liner installation process, including reviews of penetration details, concrete placement procedures, and spark testing as wall sections were completed.
As construction nears completion, the Diversion Structure and Junction Box stand as examples of modern wastewater infrastructure. The general contractor has repeatedly emphasized that, while the installation process required significant time and attention, it makes sense in the long term and that they are glad to be involved in reinvesting in the city.
