FAQ

Two-Part, Hand-Moldable Putties

Q: How long will it keep?
A: The recommended shelf life is one year. If components are pliable, it is usable.

Q: How can the shelf life be extended?
A: Store in a cool, dry environment and out of direct sunlight. Ideal storage temperature is 75ºF (24ºC). If you do not use the entire set of sticks, it
is important to tightly rewrap the sticks. Saran wrap or polyethylene
food bags will help create an air tight storage container. In storage, an outer layer of hard skin may form on the surface of the sticks. This must be removed before using the remaining pliable portions.

Q: Can the putty be tinted?
A: Putty can be tinted using an oil-based tinting product. Cure time will increase, but not significantly. Note that the color of the original product will effect final color.

Q: After I apply the putty, how long must I wait to use the repaired item or to paint and sand the putty?
A: 1-1/2 to 2 hours if the air temperature is above 65ºF (18ºC).

Q: What kind of paint can I use to paint the putty?
A: Water or oil-based paints can be used. Stains may not result in a
uniform finish since the putty is non-absorbent.

Q: How thin can I apply the putty?
A: The consistency of the mix makes it difficult to apply less than 1/16". Keep in mind this is a putty, not a glue.

Q: How can I smooth it?
A: While the material is still pliable, gently smooth the surface with a clean sponge or putty knife dampened with water.

Q: What is the minimum temperature at which it will cure?
A: The minimum cure temperature is 60ºF (16ºC). If the air temperature is less than 60ºF (16ºC), warm the mixed putty by applying heat using a hair dryer to blow hot air onto the putty for about 15 minutes, keeping the dryer 3 to 4 inches from the surface of the putty.

Q: Why is one stick hard?
A: This material is too old to use and should be disposed of. If components are pliable, it is usable.

Q: How do I wash it off my hands or skin?
A: Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Frequent users or those with sensitive skin should use rubber gloves for mixing and application.

Q: Will it change color?
A: Prolonged exposure to UV (ultra-violet) light may alter the color. Color changes may also be noticed over a period of several years.

Q: Can I apply the putties to a hot surface?
A: Yes, but generally continuous exposure to temperatures above 160ºF (71ºC) will shorten the life of the repair.
